If we’re working together, I hope these notes make our collaboration smoother and more transparent.¹ These are the standards I aim for at work — what helps me do my best. Every preference or strength can also be a weakness, so I’ve included some counterpoints too. Feedback and new perspectives are always welcome.

Death before thrash
  • What’s the simplest way to share this, in the right place?
  • Fewer back-and-forths = happier inboxes
  • Aim for visibility: right audience, right context, right level of detail.²
  • I have only made this letter longer because I have not had the time to make it shorter.” ³
  • Effort to be concise (and use of cmd+f) is always noticed.
  • Banter is great; irrelevant info, less so.

Counter:
  • Sometimes, there just isn’t time to be perfectly concise.
  • Not everyone can (or should) dig through all the docs before chiming in.
  • "Sometimes someone without baggage has the needed perspective to move a project forward, without all the context."
  • “Banter” and “noise” is too subjective.

Feedback, please
  • I gravitate toward work and teams where feedback is candid, timely, and actionable.
  • I’m most energized when there’s a strong feedback loop; it makes everything better, faster.

Counter:
  • Not everyone is a natural at giving direct feedback (and that’s okay).
  • Sometimes the best opportunities don’t have feedback systems in place, yet.

Commit mindfully
  • I value self-awareness and follow-through over vague promises or indecision.
  • Clear commitments move things forward. “I’ll send a draft by Tuesday” or saying no⁵ is better than “I might be able to help.”

Counter:
  • Predicting workloads isn’t always easy.

I don’t always hit my own mark, but these are the conditions where I do my best work. If you spot inconsistency or hypocrisy, please let me know.

What about you? How do you like to work? Maybe swapping credos is the fastest way to see if we’d get along. Say hello and share yours. I’d love to compare notes.

  4. Forgot where I read this, but it didn't come from my brain
